WALLISTON SAFARI - 2
SEPTEMBER 2007
LAST YEAR - WALLISTON SAFARI ONE
In 2006, at about the traditional WW time of the year, a few of the WW old hands, plus a few others (rellies and friends) as their guests, went on a revisit to a few of their much loved Murchison haunts.
By contrast with the old WW, WS 2006 was set up quite informally, with almost no paperwork and just two or three planning meetings in a local coffee shop.
We were away in the Murchison for about a week. Those in each vehicle paid their own way and catered for themselves, although the WS group had drawn up and agreed upon a menu outline which, mostly, we all followed.
It was a different and relaxing experience, giving more time to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful places where we camped. The days were more informal and the scene was altogether more laid back and less time driven. One couple joined us for just the middle days, instead of the whole week.
We had inter-vehicle UHF CB communications on our “Whiskey Sierra” net. We moved every day. Wake-up time was more leisurely. Evening sunset drinkies were delightful. Papa Luigi’s at supper time was good too.
“For the record”:- LAST YEAR’S PARTICIPANTS were: Bernard Arrantash, Bruce Cameron, John Andrews, Lindsay Craig, Joan Brown, Carline & Dennis Humfrey, Keith Powell, Cheryl & John Krokosz.
OTHER INVITEES last year were; Colin Jobling, Brian Crombie, and Lesley Kelleher.
Some of our station owner friends seemed even more welcoming with just a small group and have mentioned to us some further challenging places of interest to visit……SO
THIS YEAR - WALLISTON SAFARI TWO 2007
A self appointed committee of two met over coffee recently and reached the unanimous decision to float a proposal for WS2.
This letter is to test the waters for WS2 to happen in about September 2007.
We would be flexible about most things (e.g. dates and itinerary) but probably less flexible about other things (e.g. no kids and no pets!).
At this very early stage we are looking for expressions of interest from potential participants in WS2. If you could be a starter, you are asked to reply with an email giving details of your vehicle, who might travel in it, your diary “windows” in September, and any comments/suggestions.
Already Julie & Danny Woodhams and Kathy & Richard Young have said they might want to participate in WS2..(not the self appointed committee) although the “self appointed committee” are ready to JUST DO IT.
Of course, it is never possible to fit in with every variable that every individual might prefer, but we will do our best. And of course, your response now is by no means seen as a definite commitment.
We look forward to your emailed response, from which we will arrange a
second “meeting” …coffee at …….. …… .
JUST DO IT.

Please advise by return if you are able to attend...if not we will understand ...work, other social commitments etc.
At the meeting we would like to set an approx date for this years Safari (possibly the 2nd or 3rd week of September) and see if we have any further "expressions of interest for an invitation." If you cannot attend but have a question or suggestion for the Safari please send it to me and I will pass it on at the meeting.

Hi Folks....Bruce of the Murchison here again
Here is an update of what has been done towards this year's trip.
I have seen participants in the street, at the pictures and everyone is asking for news.
Even our local "barber shop" is wanting to knows what is happening?
Email response from me will be limited from the 14th-23rd July as some of the family will be in the snow at Mt Hotham Vic.
So will need thawing out when we get back and I can't think of a better place than a trip to the Murchison to JUST DO IT.

WALLISTON SAFARI - 2
SEPTEMBER 2007
NEWSLETTER 2
Hi Folks this is Bruce again
DO WE NEED A MEETING ? or JUST DO IT !
WHEN: 15th September for 8 days or so.
WHERE: Murchison Goldfields…
Wooleen Station—Murchison Settlement area
In the light of various discussions within our group, both during and since WS 1, some of us have begun looking at an outline itinerary for WS 2.
We are keen to include the things that various participants see as their priorities, but we are already finding that, within eight or so days, the only way we could do it all would be to stage an event like the Dakar Rally. First draft itinerary had us travelling in excess of 350kms for each of the last three days from the Wooleen Station –Murchison Settlement area back to Walliston. Instead of that concept, there seems to be a preference for daily distances to be relatively short, with plenty of time for rest, recreation and exploration.
Also we are mindful of the original concept of WS, which was to revisit old WW sites that we have come to know and love.
We predict that most participants would want a leisurely trip, even if that means we leave out some desirable destinations. There is a preference among at least some of us for two nights on Boogardie
Station at Warroan Hill, where the station people have more that they want to show us. There is also a wish among several of us to base ourselves for two other nights at Woolgerong, where sub groups may wish to have extended time to explore Woolgerong itself, or visit Cue, or visit the Inn Ruins, or go to Walga Rock - or use that intervening day with some combination of these alternatives.
As you will see we have gone for a compromise at Woolgerong,
by arriving and leaving in the middle of the day, but giving us a
full 24 hours to explore that area.
We have looked at the distances involved in doing the above within eight days. Bearing in mind the hundreds of kilometres we need to cover just to get up to the Murchison District and then return home again, we have concluded that there is not room to add an extended excursion into new territory - desirable as that might be.
In the light of all this, we are currently looking at the following provisional itinerary. We stress that it is not set in concrete and probably won't be, even when we actually set out from Perth in September.
Your comments on the above and the draft itinerary below are invited.

Email of the 1 November 2007
Hi folks
This is a wrap for Walliston Safari 2..2007 attached "we had it all"
Please keep in touch as next year we intend to explore some of the Walliston Wanderers tracks east of the highway that I
have never been on in my 16 years of Wandering and many other Walliston Wanderers have not traversed for about 20 years.
Your input is encouraged.

JUST DO IT LIFE'S TOO SHORT
WALLISTON SAFARI - 2
SEPTEMBER 2007
“ we had it all”
Warm days, cool nights, warm fire, lovely sunrises, beautiful sunsets, good food, cold beer, WINE , hot tea, good company, birds singing…………………can’t wait.
Hi folks …yep it’s me again
Some people ask why do you go out there ? Well apart from the above we …got lost a couple of times had hot and cold showers ..got attacked by emus and an “Aboriginal” carrying spears… that would not have happened if we had stayed home.
ALSO:
We saw heaps of wildlife, were able to share with new people, new and old places on new and old tracks.
At one evening meal during preparation we got some “expert” advice from a visiting celebrity chef ...…...PAPPA LUIGI ..(don’t worry you will all probably get a mention before I am finished)
In no particular order:
Dennis …are you going to have a shoulder operation for real or just bring a sling again? Carldenn Winery …Murchison sales outlet ..well done. Might have to stop taking the . . . s as all your wine is becoming most enjoyable.
Lindsay… “event photographer” and Joan, are we going to get moving pictures on the blue screen again?
Danny … 40 question man, inspected 3600kms of fencing, 100 gates and wrote the whole trip off to TAX.
Bernard … expert commentary as usual. Peter and or Bernard should have got the “Wally Hat” for bringing and carrying a fold up bed when camping in the bush.
Cheryl … a rake this year, to do a bit of gardening before tenting,
John … “Yes, Cheryl. If that’s what you say dear.”
Colin, Billy and Paul… the Walliston to Walloo bash boys (nice bash vehicle) I think that we should have all learnt something here …after a hard day’s sight seeing, sit down in the shade of the vehicle and rest and have a beer before putting up the tents.
Richard and Kathy …led us all on a “bum” steer, forgot to get something in Cue, maybe it was fuel, maybe it was a shower, maybe it was beer, maybe we will never know.
Julie …of the outer suburbs, what was the reason for setting up your tent so far away ? No kids ..second honeymoon ?
Carl … still got that water bottle as well as plenty of tea, coffee and sugar. Thanks for the “Wally” get together last Saturday night. And thanks for organising the “flying doctor”.
Big John …a superb auction, IUOs this year, maybe visa next year …must be “that hat”.
STATION NEWS:
Boogardie
Spoke with Jannet Jones who came out to see us at the rock with her husband Paul. We are in trouble with Paul for forgetting to go and see the baby eagle. I said to Jannet that we would make it up to Paul next year and bring him a beer or three, and she said that he didn’t need that as he seemed to have enough, but I said don’t you worry about that, this is men’s business, we will pay our debts.
They are shearing about 10,000 sheep in the next few weeks and would welcome any amount of rain after that.
The Glen
Had a talk to both Kerrie and Morrie, they need rain now any plenty of it. They did not get any that came down in Cue the week after we were there.
I thanked them for the water we got from them and was told that it will always be there for us.
I learnt in Cue when coming back from Broome that Morrie has a crook shoulder, cannot use it at all. Maurie told me that he is coming to Perth to see a specialist in early November and will probably need an operation to fix it.
LOST:
We got lost a couple of times this year and we “knew” where we were going …wait till you see what is in the planning for next year, then if we get lost we will be lost. It will be “duelling GPSs”.
AS THE EMBERS COOL:
Clearly, WALLISTON SAFARI is firmly established on the landscape as an annual event in which privileged people (adults only!) get to enjoy what so many others only dream and talk about. Real outback, real campfires, real bush living and exploring, real characters, real bush stories, real vehicle and driving challenges, real remote and inland scenery, real starlit night skies, real red sunsets, real campfire jokes, real gourmet food and drinks, real red dust, real staked tyres, real flies, real cold nights, and a real dill who tries to tell us how to cook our steaks at supper time.
Time is precious
May your beer always be cold and your wine as you like it because
“life’s too short”
to have it any other way.
JUST DO IT.
