WALLISTON      SAFARI - 3

SEPTEMBER   2008

LIFE’S TOO SHORT

MEETING OF TWO

By a unanimous vote at the "secret" meeting of two it was decided that we would proceed and organise WS - 3 for 8 days, leaving on Saturday 13 September 2008.

EAST OF THE HIGHWAY

It’s been nearly thirty years since Walliston Wanderers did any major exploring east of the highway in the Youanmi and Sandstone areas. So in keeping with the idea of visiting “old Walliston haunts” we have set out a proposed itinerary.

The above is a copy of the napkin from the “secret” MEETING OF TWO at the BP Fuel Stop Kewdale, used to scribble down our ideas for this next trip.

This side of the highway are places to see like,Red Bluff, London Bridge and more.

SO

Lay down your pens, pencils, books or tools of trade and pack your swag

fill up your vehicle with fuel and people – more people per vehicle …..equals less vehicles

CHANGES OF ROUTINE

  • If possible ..shower in camp (after dinner) to save time during the day to “do things”
  • Try to do fewer kilometres so as to have more time to look and explore.
  • Suggestions PLEASE.

RUMOURS and LIES

  • Billy Bungarra has a new “off road camper” ?? ??

  • Danny needs to count some more gates and fence posts for another tax deduction.

  • Carline wants to do a six day reconnaissance trip

  • Factual  ..vehicles still sporting the “Walliston Safari” sign on the front windscreen are: Dennis and Carl’s Landcruiser; Richard and Kathy’s Nissan and KM-17 and trailer.
  • Bruce has been tasting beers from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and all places in between…just to make sure that I have the best one for the coming safari.
  • Bernard is now a “truckie” having learned and passed at his first attempt the Heavy Rigid licence classification.

3

  •  Colin Jobling was last seen with caravan in tow headed north to a warmer climate, going as far as the top of Cape York Peninsula !! Might not see him for a while.
  • John Andrews was last seen trying to round up elephants in South Perth.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Please advise by email or phone of your or your friends or anyone’s interest in participating in this year’s safari.

MEETING

Please advise available mornings for a coffee meeting probably the week of 9th -14th JUNE.

BRING IT ON

The call back to the Murchison seems to strengthen round about this time of year.  We start to long again for that blood red dirt, the sharp rugged mulga, the outback wild life, exploring relics of days long gone, the deep blue skies, the crisp clear mornings, golden breakaways and soft gentle sunsets, lively warm campfires, happy companionship, bush banquets each evening, and good yarns, happy drinks and maybe Papa Luigi's, before comfy nights of relaxing sleep  -  and the place to ourselves.

Final Wrap Newsletter - Wrong Way Wround

Email of 17 November 2008

Good morning to all

Attached is the newsletter that wraps up Walliston Safari 3.
Has been a long time coming ...but ...is in colour and 3D.
Steve can you forward onto the other members of "the brothers three" ?

Wait and see what  the next "secret meeting of two" will have planned for the wonderful Murchison.
This meeting is scheduled for... sometime soon.

LATE NEWS

A couple of days ago it was my birthday ....thankyou ...and I received as a birthday present surprise ...
a new tent  which I think should be put to use more than once a year.

SO  as previously mentioned "The Holland Track & Cave Hill Woodlines" beckon, Hyden to Coolgardie. Because we do the
Murchison in September I propose that this Safari be just before winter (after the heat) maybe the second week of the
combined Easter break and School holidays, probably the week of the 18-25th April 2009.
This would be   WALLISTON Safari 4. "here for a good time ...not a long time"

I have been reading a book about this area and it has a history in time similar to the Murchison, but for only one reason GOLD.
Richard and Kathy Young have recently travelled to this area and I eagerly await their report, which I will forward onto interested parties.

There are plenty of campsites lots of man made history and natural beauty.

Please indicate your interest and comment on the proposed dates of the Safari.

Bruce ...oe.( of  everywhere )

NEWSLETTER    WRONG WAY WROUND

LIFE’S TOO SHORT

Hi Folks

RAINY DAY START

Quick introductions all around for the “brothers three” Steve, Richard and Kim Dartnell late additional participants travelling with Bernard. Quick because it was raining and quick because after months of planning it was just time to go.

We did it …it was customary for Walliston Wanderers to do a “ clockwise loop” after leaving Paynes Find…but the scheduling of stops lunch etc during the day would not always fit the itinerary. This year we decided to give it a go again and do it the WRONG WAY WROUND. Success right from the start …we found a great NEW first night campsite at Meergoon Hill on Pindabunna Station.

                                                       Meergoon Hill Campsite

NEW GROUND

Many of us have not travelled these roads and some of us not for nearly thirty years. And some of us not in this direction. Day two… We headed for “Red Bluff” …after a couple of false starts and a staked trailer tyre on Lindsay’s trailer we found Red Bluff.

As is customary on a Walliston Trip we played cricket on “The Oval” at Youanmi. I think “the visitors” won by taking a catch on the last ball of the game.

We moved on to see

London Bridge …The Brewery …Sandstone …Barlongi Rock…  Meekatharra where we turned south. We travelled on some more familiar roads and tracks for a few days. After Boogardie we found the gravel again to go via Yoweragabbie, Wogano and on to Kirkalocka and then bitumen to Paynes Find.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

We saw…

Abandoned towns, cars and trucks, railway sidings, mines, stations, bottle collections …outstations, mining equipment old and new?

We had …

Moonlit nights, rainy days, warm days, dust storms.

At night …

Great campsites, guitar playing, didgeridoo playing, warm campfires, hot showers ! great company and good yarns.

RFDS

Our auction raised $543.15 which has been forwarded on by Carline.

Thanks to all, especially John (the hat) Andrews who was ably supported this year by Julie (wife of the newly disabled Danny… prospective RFDS patient)

DANNY

                                                      What can I say !

From the directors chair.

Cricket star one day to… hey man… the next …hey Jules can you get me…hey Jules could you …hey Jules…

THE WALLY HAT

                                                                  Still doing the rounds.

RE-UNION CAMPFIRE

A big gathering of Wallies was held at Carline and Dennis’s on Saturday 25th October with a big fire, courtesy of Dennis and his vine prunings.

John showed us all his photos of the trip which were extensive and a great memory jogger of a great Safari. Also Lesley showed us her album of photo memories from the trip.

WELL THAT’S IT FOR THIS YEAR

Time to “wrap up” this newsletter of this WRONG WAY WROUND  Safari. New places, new faces, new yarns told, new yarns made (the day that Danny went belly up) old yarns that just get better with time.

We covered a lot of country this time, about 2150kms, we saw our share of wildlife, we made new acquaintances, we went to a lot of new places and learnt some more about the wonderful Murchison.
