"here for a good time ...not a long time"
Email of the 17 November 2008
LATE NEWS
A couple of days ago it was my birthday ....thankyou ...and I received as a birthday present surprise ...
a new tent which I think should be put to use more than once a year.
SO as previously mentioned "The Holland Track & Cave Hill Woodlines" beckon, Hyden to Coolgardie. Because we do the
Murchison in September I propose that this Safari be just before winter (after the heat) maybe the second week of the
combined Easter break and School holidays, probably the week of the 18-25th April 2009.
This would be WALLISTON Safari 4. "here for a good time ...not a long time"
I have been reading a book about this area and it has a history in time similar to the Murchison, but for only one reason GOLD.
Richard and Kathy Young have recently travelled to this area and I eagerly await their report, which I will forward onto interested parties.
There are plenty of campsites lots of man made history and natural beauty.
Please indicate your interest and comment on the proposed dates of the Safari.

DECISSIONS
We don’t have to choose before we go as to where we may camp on the last nights of our trip. Things to see and do along “the track” are plentiful. Because this trip is new to us it is very likely that our itinerary may change several times during our journey. So, may I suggest that we ponder the above different itineraries and keep an open mind to the endless possibilities of camp sites for the last few nights on the track.
FOOD MENU
We do not intend to put out a suggested menu for this trip, BUT will have
B-B-Q’s out for use every night and morning. Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday nights the camp oven will also be put out so that a varied menu can be used.
NIBBLES
I will set out a nibbles roster in the next newsletter.
RUBBISH
We need this trip to plan to take all our rubbish with us between Hyden & Coolgardie. You need to take this into account in your planning of your meals. We do not have a problem with burning more rubbish than we have in the past. I will again have a standup rubbish bag for “bottles and crushed cans only.”
TOILETS
A volunteer is required to carry the toilet tents green box, shovel & “wind up the world.” The toilet tents have been modified by Bernard so that we do not need the heavy “banger” and corner pegs. Instead we will have to be mindfull of a couple of guy ropes at night.
RFDS
It has been a tradition for us to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor by way of an auction of small items donated for this cause. I know that we have had fires here and in Victoria as well as floods in Queensland and New South Wales, but with us on our last trip coming close to having to avail of their services I think we will still support the RFDS. Please respond?
CONCLUSION
Please respond with your thoughts on all or part of the above. This is going to be a different trip to different places where we have not been before. Things like the rubbish as mentioned above ( the item RUBBISH not all of the above) need to be allowed for.
Anyone know how to access a long range weather forecast for late April?
I know it is just after Easter so the moon will be on the way down.
Cheers for now.

Email Itinerary
Email of the 18 March 2009
Hi All...This is Bruce Again
Why do we have three draft itineraries ???
In an email from Carline she alluded to the fact that it was a long way
to travel on the last day, depending on where we made camp it could
have been up to 500kms home. (draft original)
So it was her suggestion for their vehicle and other vehicles that have
occupants that would not be attending any Anzac functions or parades
stop to see and camp at "Kokerbin Rock"
and only travel the short distance home on Saturday. (draft 2)
A third alternative was to try and fit the "Kokerbin Rock"
visit into the overall trip itinerary. (draft 3)
"KOKERBIN ROCK"
This rock is the third biggest monolith rock in Western Australia and
was mentioned by our last day lunchtime "guest speaker" from
WS 3 2008 (David Holdsworth), as a sometime MUST place to visit.
Lots to see and historic as well.
So now you have the whole story.

HOLLAND TRACK and CAVE HILL WOODLINES
Hi Folks
Great turnout for coffee at The Tea & Coffee Merchant a couple of Saturdays back. Good to see Safari members that can’t be with us on this trip. Colin is in Victoria picking up his NEW caravan. Danny has had his operation and subsequent follow up doctors visit for an x-ray and change of cast, red I believe and is back at work. It was great to meet Harry and Cath also.
Apologies at the meeting from Bernard and his passenger Bill Tibbertsma. Bill is my accountant, an experienced bushwalker and camper, the rest he can fill in around the campfire.
DEPARTURE TIME
7:00 for a 7:30am departure Saturday 18 April 2009.
from
25 Carob Tree Place LESMURDIE.
DON’T FORGET

VEHICLE SIGNAGE

Call sign 2…Saturday 18th
“ 3…Sunday 19th
“ 4…Monday 20th
“ 5…Tuesday 21st
“ 6…Wednesday 22nd
“ 7…Thursday 23rd
TOILETS & FIREWOOD
As call sign 1 is carrying all the toilet gear it has been decreed that this vehicles occupants be exempted from toilet construction and pull down duties.
There may be too many people to do the toilets; the extras can source firewood as I understand that it may not be as plentiful as we are used to in the Murchison.
Note: 1. There may be toilet facilities at some of our campsites.
2. Should our group become separated later in the trip it
may be necessary to think about toileting at that time.
EXEMPTION
The people in the vehicle that is on NIBBLES ROSTER are exempt from toilet & firewood duty as to allow them preparation time of “nibbles” for the hungry workers.
WEATHER
I understand from the long range forecasts that we will have warm sunny days and cool-cold nights.
TRACK REPORT
An ex Walliston Wanderer, David Freakley and his family are traveling The Holland Track over the Easter break and is going to give us a report on it’s condition upon his return.

FUEL
Drivers will note from the itineraries that they will need approximately 400kms allowance of fuel when leaving Hyden. This is without allowing for any further site seeing detours or “double-backing.”
RUBBISH
Remember, we all have to deal with our rubbish either individually or as a group.
NOT LONG NOW
Well it is not long to go, only Easter and our departure day will be soon with us. We are doing our bit for the economy, new water cans, new rubbish bins, modified tent pegs for the toilets, a new Engel and of course a few extra drinks to share with each other in a remote place watching a twittering campfire.

Hi Folks
What a great break away from the hussle and bussle of city life.
To eat freshly prepared gourmet food in a million star outdoor restaurant!
We travelled through the best grain growing farmland in our great state,
through the town of Corrigin that holds a "Guinness Book of Records" title for the most
"" Dog in a Ute""
We also drove through, albeit too quickly some beautiful towns, Quairading, Bruce Rock,
Southern Cross and of course Coolgardie, which is a must to return to and finish going over
the wonderful and intriguing history of that town in the goldrush era of our state.

Twenty people, eight vehicles, nearly eleven thousand kilometers travelled between all vehicles, forty eight tyres on the road and not one puncture.
OTHER TRIP STATISTICS
140 morning teas; 380 breakfasts, lunches and dinners;
120 nibbles; 10 litres port; 40 bottles of wine; 180 beers;
500 litres of water; 7 dozen eggs; etc etc.
WEATHER
Perfect one day and perfect the next.
Warm and still with beautiful starlit nights. We did have a couple of hours of rain, just enough to settle the dust (for a week). How lucky were we, arranged our itinerary early in the trip to not camp at Burra Rock and at the critical time, not to have lunch but to move on into Coolgardie and take our chances with shelter in town. The last two days were also fine albeit a little cooler. Who ever was in charge of the weather, we are all grateful to you. Oh… you also get to keep the job.
THE TRACK
Winding and overgrown.
We found, followed and read about The Holland Track. We travelled at about an average speed of 15 kilometers an hour when moving. Which was hellishly fast compared to the speed of travel of the early explorers and settlers. Low rolling hills and flattish rocks, quite a gentle flowing terrain with only a few rugged bits. The bush along the track is truly beautiful, with many stands of gimlet trees with their shiny, bronze coloured trunks and glistening green leaves. The stringy bark eucalyptus trees were also very beautiful. Not to forget the bird life.
CAVE HILL and THE WOODLINES
What a strikingly beautiful place.
When you think about why the dams were built and how they were built – by hand with very little mechanical assistance. Also the woodlines on which we travelled, carved through the gentle hills and raised across the low flats. All this in support of the woodcutters who cut the wood for the townspeople to use to cook with and as supports in the mines.
NEW TRIP – BIG GROUP
At a “secret meeting of two” somewhere out on the track it was “unanimously agreed” that we had a great group of people who worked well together during the day, to be on the move (mount up), supported and helped each other to “set up camp” at the end of the day’s travel.
NIGHT TIME
Music and singing,
Russell’s Jug – absent and departed friends and loved ones,
Pappa Luigi,
RFDS auction,
Stories and jokes,
Endless yarns and discussions,
Visitors – Henry and Josie.
WALLY HAT
You can run but you cannot hide – one day you’re gonna get caught.
THANKS
Many thanks to Richard and Kathy for taking us up the track and along the woodlines with all the points of interest as we went by.
It is not easy to lead a convoy of vehicles as a few of us know. Well done and we look forward to your assistance on future trips.
RFDS
What a hoot, what a night. Just imagine if someone stumbled upon our campsite whilst our auction was taking place. Two tables of merchandise, a big man in a funny hat, a clap of the hands and your name is in the book – you may have donated it to be auctioned and you may have just bought it back !
ALSO this year you could not say OR do anything wrong because you would get a fine for doing so.
FINAL TALLY $$ 752:00.
THE TRIP
Great company, great places to visit, reliving and visiting the history of our state. Great to do it in the great outdoors.
