“it’s great to be…in the great outdoors”
Back to the Murchison
Hi Folks, it’s me again
MEETING OF TWO
Yep – you guessed it, there has
been another “secret meeting of two” at which it was decided that we should
return again to the Murchison. So, it is proposed that we embark on an 8 day
Safari extending north-west of our traditional grounds. We will visit many
familiar and some new places on the way there and also via a different path on
the way back.
Special resolution at this meeting …to be announced in the “Late
News”.
Yep – you guessed right again … the vote was
unanimous !
PARTICIPATION
Applications for participation
(vehicles, drivers and passengers) will be received up until 5:00pm Friday 11th September 2009.
Late applications will only be
considered in person at a meeting of all participants immediately prior to
departure, 7:15am on 12th September 2009.
DEPARTURE
7:30am 12th September 2009.
From: 25 Carob Tree Place LESMURDIE.
ITINERARY
It is our intention to travel via
the Great Northern Highway to north of Paynes Find on the first day and then
stay west of the highway travelling and visiting as many places of interest (of
which I am learning from many different people that there are one hell’ ova
lot) as far north as Murchison Settlement and many in between.
DRAFT ITINERARY-1
Scrapped - as it did not include a
camp at
Warroan Hill. There was a revolt en-mass from
people down in
the valley.
DRAFT ITINERARY -2
Saturday 12th
Walliston - Noncutting Hill
(Kirkalocka). 500kms
Sunday 13th
Noncutting Hill – Claypan Lake. 200kms via Yoweragabbie, Mt Magnet, Cue, Danny’s
Demise, Glen. 200kms
Monday 14th
Claypan Lake – Murchison Settlement – area. 160kms
Tuesday 15th
Murchison Settlement – Boora Pool
(Murgoo or Meka Station). 180kms
Wednesday 16th
Boora Pool - Warroan Hill. 150kms
Thursday 17th
Warroan Hill – Jokers Tunnel. 120kms
Friday 18th
Jokers Tunnel – Remlap Station. 240kms
Saturday 19th
Remlap Station – Walliston. 350kms
Total estimated Safari distance =
1900kms.
CONCLUSION
We will have time on Monday to
make contact with the people at Boolardy Station as “the brothers three” have a
family association here, as well as other family ties to this area.
In keeping with our intention to
follow and explore “old Walliston Wanderer” haunts. Jingemarra Station (which
we should be passing through on Wednesday) is one of those places and also
reportedly has a Dean Hawes built Chapel.
Keith Powell is putting together a
list of places to visit in the Wooleen - Murchison Station area.
Please respond with your thoughts on all
or part of the above.
Cheers for now,
B…otm.

Back to the Murchison
Hi Folks, it’s me again
Well it is less than 5 weeks till
we leave for The Murchison again. Many of you are away, have been away and are
still to go away for winter breaks and holidays. I have just come back from Melbourne (cold) and more
recently SANDSTONE (warm). Just did an overnighter to get some red dust back
into the lungs and are now feeling much better.
PARTICIPATION
Can I have your intention to
participate together with your vehicle participant names so that Bernard can
make up the “net” diagrams?
Vehicle “call signs” will probably
remain the same with any new vehicles given a new higher number.
DEPARTURE
7:00 - 7:30am 12th September 2009.
From: 25 Carob Tree Place LESMURDIE.
ITINERARY
At the moment “draft itinerary -
2” seams to be looking like what we will start with.

Saturday 12th

(Kirkalocka). 500kms

Total estimated Safari distance =

CHAPEL
Correction … The Dean Hawes chapel
mentioned in “Newsletter 1” is not at /or on Jingemarra Station, but is at
Melangata which is on our proposed itinerary. Thanks to Lindsay and Bernard and
Google.
RFDS
The tradition continues.
THE WALLY HAT
The tradition continues.
BITS and
PIECES
FUEL on this Safari is not of great importance as long as drivers fill up often;
even in small towns especially Murchison Settlement as it is approximately
400kms, to Yalgoo. (this is probably the longest journey without passing
through a town).
RUBBISH we will all look after our
own.
SHOWERS out on the track - nothing
organized with the Station Homesteads.
NIBBLES a roster will be issued
closer to departure – rest assured you will
be part of it.
DISHES – a communal wash and dry
after dinner and breakfast.
MENU
B B Q’s will be out for all
evening meals and breakfasts. The oven will be out on every second night i.e. Sunday – Tuesday – Thursday. Special
requests for the oven on non rostered nights will incur a “fee” payable to the
RFDS.
MAP
An A4 map has been made by Bernard
of our proposed itinerary and will be printed for distribution to all vehicles.
CONCLUSION
Keith has been thinking about
“points of interest” in the “new” area of our Safari. In the next few weeks I
will be contacting the Station owners of our known camping sites, and the new
Stations that we propose to camp on and pass through. From the “new’ Stations I
will be seeking information on points of interest that we don’t already know of
and permission to camp.
DO YOU have any planning
suggestions?
DO YOU have any questions?

Hi Folks, it’s me again
Yes it
is nearly that day. That day in September we have all been longing for. The day
that we leave for “The Murchison”. No more standing around between rainstorms
trying to get a little sun on our backs, it will be there all day.
Some
new roads and places to see, some of us have been there and most of us have
not.
Wildflowers
are in abundance this year but don’t go much past Paynes Find.

Newsletter 4
Email of 14 November 2009 Hi Folks
Please find attached Newsletter 4 "Done & Dusted" a final wrap of our recent Safari 5 to the Murchison.
"Some
say" ..it was the best Safari...maybe because it is most recent in
their memory...anyhow it was a "good one" as far as I am concerned.
News
I have access to the ..back room ..of
our web site and can see that we are getting about 40 hits per month,
many of these are of course ourselves but others are from afar, most
recently an ex Walliston Wanderer from 1975 now living in Macow..China.
I even finished up at our web site when I googled Dean Hawes and
Melangata Station, when looking for information about the Chapel in the
Homestead.
Secret meetings of two have recently been held overseas. We found
this necessary as someone has been spying with listening devices, but
we are sure that they have no information about forthcoming Safaris
from these overseas meetings, apart from that, that is already written.
Details of these meetings will be made public in the new year.
The festive season and summer holidays are nearly upon us, please enjoy.

NEWSLETTER 4
“it’s great
to be…in the great outdoors”
DONE
& DUSTED
Hi Folks, it’s me again
The Murchison, what
a great place, big, beautiful, never ending vistas and history.
Twenty-one people,
two thousand two hundred and forty five kilometers, eight vehicles and eight
days.
Sun and rain, water
and dust, broken wheels and staked tyres.
ON THE ROAD
Day one -
Saturday September 12.
Transport day -
getting out there.
We got off to a great
start with all vehicles together by Midland
and headed north. Bindoon – morning tea Good luck – Bad luck, the Dartnall 4
had the good luck not to loose a wheel off their new you-beaut trailer, the bad
luck was that they had lost all the wheel nuts, wrecked the studs on the hub
and the rim. With resourcefulness and ingenuity they managed a repair, and
found us at our campsite by dinner time.
Our campsite was
not far off the highway and it felt like the passing road- trains were coming
through our tents. This campsite was not where we wanted to camp, but
fortunately was easy for the Dartnall 4 to find us. Distance 510kms.
Day two – Sunday
Another good start,
we headed onto the gravel which when rough was really rough. Wogarno turn off –
morning tea – oops - the caravan has broken a brake assembly, ably disconnected
by Dennis and all is good. Mt Magnet, Cue, Glen Station and many places along
the way, led us to another new to Walliston Safari campers, campsite at Claypan Lake. We navigated the water at low tide
in time to set up camp and watch the sunset through the trees. Distance 245kms.
Day three – Monday
A slow start to the
day, we went around the lake and managed at high tide to scramble onto high
ground without too much drama. Our travels today took us through Kalli Station,
Boolardy Station, Wooleen Station, where we were invited for tea & coffee
at the homestead, then onto Murchison Settlement and to our planned campsite by
the Murchison River on Billabalong Station.
Staked tyre – Bruce. Distance 280kms.
Day four – Tuesday
Many signed points
of interest along the track today, “Well 9” on the Carnarvon Road, “old fence”, “corner inn”.
Stations we passed through, Twin Peaks,
Murgoo, Wittenoom and onto Meka where we met up with Billy Dalgleish and Colin
Jobling, talked to the station owners and got directions to our campsite at a
water hole. Staked tyre – Bruce, Distance 210kms.
Day five –
Wednesday
A little rain
overnight but fine by morning. We travelled through Jingemarra Station and past
it’s big homestead and onto Melangata Station and the heritage listed Dean
Hawes designed homestead and Chapel, also painted pressed steel ceilings. We
then moved on south to Dalgaranga Station to see the broken dam and then to the
Meteorite crater, Mt Farmer Station and onto Boogardie Station with all it’s
places of interest, old and new shearing sheds, workshops, vehicles, homestead,
bottle collection, bower bird’s bower, Coventry motors and to our grassed
campsite at Warroan Hill.
Drinks and nibbles
on the rock, while watching the setting sun. Distance 185kms.
Day six – Thursday
A casual start from
a great campsite saw us travel to the orbicular granite mine and on down to
Munbinia Station and a roofed dam with stand up rock contour channels stretching
kilometers around the adjacent rock, connected to the dam by a 4 metre wide 180
– 200metre long cement lined viaduct. We then found our way by new fence lines
to Murrum Station, lunch and a chat with Henry & Josie Jones. A quick look
at an old wooden rail bridge on the way to Yalgoo and Jokers Tunnel campsite.
Distance 170kms.
Day seven – Friday
Back to Yalgoo to
see the museum and another Dean Hawes Chapel. Golden Grove, Fields Find, wild
flowers and everlastings all the way to Paynes Find. A quick stop here and we
moved quickly south to our last night campsite on Remlap Station – a lovely
spot called North Dam. Distance 285kms
Day eight –
Saturday September 19.
Transport day -
getting home.
Our final morning
meeting, then hit the bitumen for the slow drag home – the towns they go past –
fuel stops, lunch, came via Mundaring Weir and a quick stop along the track to
say our final goodbyes. Distance 360kms.
RFDS
Our auction raised
$1,236.95 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Many thanks to our stand-in
auctioneer Colin Jobling and his capable assistant Julie Woodhams. Also a
special thanks to Carl’s mum for the proceeds of sales of hand made items sold
through Carldenn Homestead Winery. This is a big total folks, so many thanks to
all.
THE TRIP
An easy start to a
great safari. Day one was a casual drive after Bindoon, and the trailer mishap
we were always looking and listening to see if the Dartnall 4 were catching us
up.
From day two our
days were funfilled and full with new places to see, new people to talk to and
new places to camp.
Campsites
Of the seven
campsites only one – Warroan – had Walliston Safari camped at before, some
others were Walliston Wanderer campsites that many of us had visited many times
before. It was great to camp in new places, explore the local area and watch
the sunset and for some the sunrise over a new horizon.
People
We spoke to many
people along the way, mostly station owners or their managers and families. The
friendliness of these people always amazes me, they will stop what they are
doing and havachat. Maybe it is not every day of the year that eight vehicles
and twenty one people drop by to say hello or g’day mate.
Sights
Every day there
would be new and beautiful sights, great views when you reach the top of a
crest or the edge of a breakaway, down in a valley the wildflowers and
everlastings were something to behold. Something we’ll remember I know.
WALLY WINDUP
We had a great windup
at Carl and Dennis’s on the 31st October. A great turn out by Wally
Wanderers, Wally Safariers and Wanta be Wallies.
As usual plenty to
eat, plenty to drink and plenty of smoke in your eyes.
Cheers for now,
B…otm.
